After reading the Third Sector’s report, “Interim Leadership in the Nonprofit Sector: The State of Interim Leadership,” I was struck by how much more awareness there is about interim leadership as a distinct profession. Yet several myths persist about what interim executives do and why their role matters.
So, let’s set the record straight.
Myth 1: Interim Executives Are Just “Seat Warmers”
Reality: Interim executives are far more than temporary placeholders.
The role of an interim is much more than bringing in the mail and watering the plants. Fully engaged interim executives provide steadying leadership, a fresh and neutral perspective, and specialized expertise for organizations in transition. They help guide organizations through uncertainty, stabilize operations, and prepare the ground for the next permanent leader.
Myth 2: Interims Can’t Understand Your Organization’s Culture
Reality: Interim leaders become part of the organization from the moment they start.
Interim executives become part of the organization from the day they start. They work in partnership with the board, manage staff for long-term success, and provide fiscal stewardship for programs and operations. In addition, their “outsider” status allows them to see strengths and challenges with fresh eyes, helping organizations address issues that may have gone unnoticed.
Myth 3: It Doesn’t Matter Who Serves as the Interim
Reality: Matching the right interim leader to the organization’s needs is crucial.
Interims are not interchangeable. Everyone brings their own focus, specialties, and personality. The best outcomes happen when the interim’s abilities and approach align well with the organization’s operational, programmatic, and people needs.
Myth 4: The Organization Can’t Afford to Hire an Interim
Reality: Almost any organization can afford an interim leader.
One common arrangement is to hire them as a “part-time temporary employee,” meaning they are a W2 employee and are paid in the same was as a permanent executive. This flexibility makes interim leadership accessible to organizations of all sizes.
Why Interim Leadership Matters
Interim executives are strategic resources for nonprofits and mission-driven organizations. They bring stability, clarity, and expertise during times of transition and help set organizations up for sustainability and success in the longer term.
